Mother Talkers

My little girl has grown up

Well, I never thought I'd be here when my DD is just 11.5 years old. I know it's the norm, but I somehow thought it would be delayed for us. My little girl started her period today. What's most surprising? Well, she is so guarded in her emotions and so private about things that go on with her, I am somewhat surprised that she actually told me today, the day it happened. I could completely see her waiting several days to tell me. But that's not the most surprising part.

No, the most surprising part is that she informed me via EMAIL. Yes, my own daughter sent me an email from across the living room to tell me that she started her period.

I know I should be happy to receive any kind of communication from her, but I can't help but feel a little wistful about the conversation we didn't just have.

Oh, I emailed back and asked her to meet me in her room so we could evaluate what we need to purchase. She has a few pads from the day they saw the maturation video, so she's okay for the moment. So we did get to talk a bit [I did most of the talking, she did a lot of shoulder-shrugging and saying "yes" or "no"]. But a warm heart-to-heart, it was not.

Did I miss something, a mother-daughter experience to remember forever, or is this just the "new" mother-daughter experience of the 21st century?
